A fast-loading business website on a phone

Why Fast Websites Get the Click (and the Customer)

houseSteve Keri Oct 24, 2026

Think about the last time a website made you wait. You probably didn't wait. You hit back and tapped the next result. Your customers do the same thing, and every second your site takes to load is a chance for them to pick someone else.

What a Slow Site Really Costs

Google studied this on mobile, where most local searches happen. As load time went from 1 second to 10 seconds, the chance a visitor left without doing anything rose 123% (Think with Google). The same research found that pages crammed with more elements converted far worse.

That's the hidden cost. You can rank well, pay for ads and have great reviews, and still lose the customer in the three seconds after they tap.

One website loads instantly while two others are still spinning

How Google Measures Speed

Google tracks real visitors' experience with three numbers called Core Web Vitals, and says its ranking systems use them (Google Search Central). The targets (Core Web Vitals):

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): how fast the main content appears. Aim for under 2.5 seconds.
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP): how fast the page reacts to a tap. Aim for under 200 milliseconds.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): whether things jump around while loading. Aim for under 0.1.

An honest note: speed alone won't push a weak page to the top. Google puts relevant, helpful content first. But when two local businesses are close, the faster site has the edge, and it keeps more of the visitors it gets.

Why Most Small Business Sites Are Slow

It's rarely one thing. It's usually a pile of small ones:

  • Page builders and plugins. Each one adds code the phone has to download before showing anything.
  • Oversized photos. A 5 MB photo straight off a camera, shrunk to fit a small box, still downloads at full size.
  • Extra scripts. Chat widgets, pop-ups and old tracking tags that nobody remembers adding.
  • Cheap shared hosting. Your site shares a server with hundreds of others and waits its turn.

Test Yours in Two Minutes

  1. Go to PageSpeed Insights and enter your website address.
  2. Check the Mobile results first. That's where your local customers are.
  3. Compare your three Core Web Vitals with the targets above.
  4. Then open your site on your phone, on cellular data, and count the seconds.

If you counted past three, you're losing customers you already paid to attract.
