Your Customers Are Searching Right Now. Will They Find You?

Social media gets your name out. Search is where people decide who to hire. When someone needs a plumber, a dentist or dinner tonight, they open Google and pick from the first few businesses they see. If you're not one of them, you never get a shot.

The good news: local search isn't a mystery, and you don't need an ad budget to compete. Here's how it works and where to start.

Search Is Where Buying Decisions Happen

A person searching "roofer Sherman Oaks" isn't browsing. They have a problem and they want it solved. That's a very different customer than someone scrolling past your post.

They also do their homework fast. In BrightLocal's 2026 survey, 97% of consumers said they read reviews for local businesses (BrightLocal). And the bar keeps rising: 31% said they'll only use a business rated 4.5 stars or higher, up from 17% the year before (PinMeTo summary of the survey).

So in the few seconds a customer spends on a search page, they're judging your listing, your rating and your website all at once.

How Google Picks the Local Winners

Google says local results come down to three things (Google Business Profile Help):

  • Relevance: how well you match what was searched. You control this with a complete Business Profile and a website that clearly says what you do and where.
  • Distance: how close you are to the person searching. Keep your address and service areas accurate everywhere you're listed.
  • Prominence: how well known you are. Reviews, replies to reviews, and links and mentions from other sites all count.
The top local search result stands out while the rest are still loading

One thing Google is clear about: you can't pay for a better local ranking. You earn it.

Five Moves That Make a Real Difference

  1. Finish your Google Business Profile. Categories, hours, photos, services. Most profiles are half done, which is an easy edge for you. Our Google Business Profile guide walks through it.
  2. Ask every happy customer for a review. A simple text with a direct link works. Then reply to every review, good or bad.
  3. Give each service and area its own page. "Emergency plumbing in Burbank" on its own page beats one generic "Services" page.
  4. Keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere. Your site, Google, Yelp and directories should match exactly.
  5. Make your website fast. A slow site loses visitors before they read a word. That's the topic of Part 2.

Your 10-Minute Check

  • On your phone, search what you sell plus "near me"
  • Search what you sell plus your neighborhood
  • Note where you show up on the map and in the regular results
  • Check your Business Profile hours, phone and website link
  • Tap through to your site and count how long it takes to load

Don't like what you see? That's fixable.
