Website speed and local Google rankings in Los Angeles

Local SEO Series (Part 4): Why a Slow Website Is Killing Your Google Rankings

In Part 3, we talked about how a slow website can quietly throttle a perfectly optimized Google Business Profile. This time we are going to look at why that happens, and why speed might be the single most overlooked ranking factor for local businesses in Los Angeles.

Google Measures Speed, Not Just Content Google's Core Web Vitals are a direct, measurable part of how your site gets ranked. It is not a soft preference. If your homepage takes four or five seconds to load, Google assumes your site delivers a worse experience than a competitor's page that loads in under a second, and it ranks you accordingly.

The Three-Second Rule Most visitors give a website about three seconds before they bounce back to the search results. Every one of those bounces sends Google a signal that your page did not satisfy the search. Enough of those signals and your rankings start sliding, even if your content is excellent.

Mobile Makes It Worse The majority of local searches in Los Angeles happen on a phone, often on a spotty connection while someone is out running errands. A page that loads fine on a fast office WiFi connection can crawl to a stop on mobile data. Google evaluates your mobile experience specifically, and a slow mobile site will hold back your entire local ranking.

The Fix Is Rarely a Quick Plugin Most website speed problems come from the platform itself: bloated themes, page builders, and stacks of plugins fighting each other in the background. No amount of image compression fixes a foundation that was never built for speed.

At Websolutely, every website we build targets a 100% Google PageSpeed score from day one, because speed is not a finishing touch. It is the foundation everything else stands on.
